Inspect blocked

Perhaps he was using some kind of magic to prevent people from inspecting him?

It was almost five minutes before the elevator finally stopped and the attendant opened the doors. They had only two minutes of invisibility left.

The stern-faced man stepped into a dark, windowless hallway, where torches threw dancing shadows on the floor. Ian and Elor quietly followed him to the end of the hall, where he opened a door and shut it behind him.

Ian looked at Elor. “Less than two minutes left …”

“Let’s look!” she said.

Ian carefully opened the door and looked in. It was a large, dark room with furnaces belching smoke and flame, beakers bubbling with foggy liquids, and brass pipes hissing steam. They entered. There was no sign of anyone until they came through an alcove and saw the stern-faced man at the other side of the room. One window high above shone a beam of light into the haze.

Walking closer, they saw that the man was bent over a large mechanical apparatus that had dials and levers; a spinning wheel on the side of it made a whirring sound. In front of the man were four slimy pod-like things; they were about six feet high, with tubes snaking out of the sides and connecting with the apparatus. The stern-faced man opened the top of the apparatus and poured a gooey liquid into it. Then he went to a desk and began writing. He didn’t look like he was leaving any time soon.

Ian and Elor looked at each other. They knew they had to get out of there. Their invisibility had one minute left. They both had one more potion, which would give them seven more minutes of invisibility. But it took five minutes for the elevator to go down and they couldn’t allow themselves to be seen on this floor. Just as they turned towards the alcove to leave, they heard voices above the whir and bubbling of the laboratory. A whole group of people had come in after them.

“And here is Dr. Vordek,” a man was saying as he led the group through the alcove. “He’s going to show us some of the exciting work he’s been doing.” Ian and Elor backed up as the group of about 20 people crowded into the space where the stern-faced man, Dr. Vordek, was working. Backing into a shadowy recess on the other side of the room, they were surprised to find a sleepy-looking guard sitting there on a chair. Beside the guard was a winding stairway, very steep and narrow. Ian and Elor looked at each other in alarm, hesitating about what to do.

Meanwhile the tour continued. Elor heard Dr. Vordek telling the group — which was apparently from some other department of the Tower — about the pod things:

“… these are third-generation prototypes. We were supposed to wait until they hatched before beginning mass production. However, with the war on, administration decided to expedite the process. In any case, I expect this batch to be free of most of the defects that plagued the first two.
